Case Summary
The plaintiffs requested that the court extend Arizona's registration deadline by three weeks due to challenges from COVID-19. LWV of Arizona filed an amicus brief in support of the registration deadline extension.
Arizona law requires that a resident must register to vote no later than 29 days before an election. The voter registration deadline for the November 2020 election was October 5, 2020. Because of COVID-19, Mi Familia Vota requested that the court extend the registration deadline to October 27, 2020. The LWV of Arizona filed an amicus brief in the case supporting the plaintiffs.
The District Court granted the plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction, extending voter registration until October 27, 2020. On appeal, the Ninth Circuit Court stayed the District Court decision, effectively ending voter registration on October 16, 2020.
