LWVUS Nominating Committee Job Description

The Nominating Committee plays a vital role in defining and ensuring the League’s future success by recruiting and selecting strong candidates for the Board of Directors.

As the League of Women Voters embarks on its second century, the organization continues to empower voters and defend democracy in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US Virgin Islands. This grassroots organization, with more than 750 State and Local affiliates, is transforming itself by centering its mission and empowering all Leagues. Through its work, the Nominating Committee plays a vital role in defining and ensuring the League’s future success by recruiting and selecting strong candidates for the Officers, Board of Directors, and Nominating Committee.  

Nominating Committee Job Description

Nominating Committee members have core organizational responsibilities, including:

  • To make decisions in the best interest of LWVUS, putting the interests of the organization before their personal and professional interests 
  • To engage openly with committee members and candidates to ensure that bias is not having unintended negative impact on the process 
  • To work collaboratively and across differences 
  • To apply a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lens in doing its work
  • To create and present a diverse and high-functioning slate of candidates for LWVUS Board and Nominating Committee

Specific Roles and Expectations

  • Maintain confidentiality of all work and communications of the committee 
  • Recruit and screen applicants for LWVUS Board and Nominating Committee 
  • Assess current board and organizational leadership needs 
  • Select nominees 
  • Present slate of nominees to delegates at 2024 LWVUS Convention 
  • Be responsive to emails and other communications methods and commit fully to participating in committee calls and work throughout the biennium 
  • Participate in National Council, National Convention, and at least one in-person meeting

LWVUS Nominating Chair Job Description

The Nominating Committee Chair is elected separately but at the same time as the elected members of the Nominating Committee during the LWVUS Convention. Both the Chair and the Committee members serve a two-year term. 

The primary responsibilities of the Nominating Committee Chair include: 

  • Work with LWV staff to: 
    • plan the work of the Nominating Committee 
    • develop meeting agendas, procedures, etc. 
  • Convene and Chair Nominating Committee meetings 
  • Oversee the work of the Nominating Committee 
  • Present Nominating Committee’s Report to the Convention as prescribed by the LWV Bylaws
