LWV Joins SCOTUS Case Challenging Texas Abortion Law

Press Release / Last Updated:

WASHINGTON — Today, the League of Women Voters of the United States joined an amicus brief filed by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and 10 other civil rights organizations in support of plaintiffs in Whole Women's Health v. Jackson, a case before the US Supreme Court challenging a recently enacted Texas law that severely limits abortion services and deputizes private individuals to enforce the law.

“Texas's abortion law uses private vigilantes to carry out its violation of civil rights, setting a dangerous precedent for the rest of the country,” said Dr. Deborah Ann Turner, board president of the League of Women Voters of the United States. “Attacks on reproductive choice are attacks on women and all people who may become pregnant, but especially on Black and brown communities who are more likely to be targeted by private citizens deputized by this law. Texas’s SB8 is vigilante discrimination enshrined into law, and it threatens the civil rights of us all.”

The League of Women Voters of the US also filed an amicus brief in support of reproductive rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health, a Mississippi case also before the Supreme Court set to be heard on Dec. 1.

Oral arguments for Whole Women's Health v. Jackson will be heard by US Supreme Court on Nov. 1.
