RE: A Successful 2020 Election
Dear U.S. Secretaries of State,
On behalf of the League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters Education Fund, we congratulate you on a successful election season.
The record voter participation in 2020 is a testament to the coordination by election administrators nationwide in administering elections safely during a global pandemic and the many efforts to expand voter access. Your commitment to the democratic process and building trust for American voters is commendable.
As one of the nation’s oldest voting rights groups with more than 750 Leagues around the country and more than half a million members and supporters, we were proud to work so closely with so many of you to administer our elections. Hundreds of League volunteers serve as poll workers and election monitors in every election, and as 2020 brought new challenges, we collectively rose to the occasion to ensure voters could fully participate in our system.
Of course, there is more work to be done to ensure voters have every opportunity to participate in elections. The advancements and proactive steps taken to expand voting rights in 2020 should apply long term, and the League looks forward to working with you to facilitate successful elections every year.
Thank you for your dedication to American democracy and ensuring our elections were free, fair, accessible, and safe in 2020.
With deepest appreciation,
Dr. Deborah Anne Turner, board president
