GOTV Talking Points

Talking points to help get out the vote in your community this year.

General Get-Out-the-Vote

  • This is a critical election year, and your voice is so important! Election Day, [November 5], is your chance to weigh in on the issues that matter most to you and your family.

  • As voters, we all have an equal say in determining our future. That’s why it is so important to go cast a vote!

  • The leaders we elect will make decisions that affect your everyday life — your job, health care, the economy, and more. So please join your friends and neighbors by being a voter on or before [November 5]!

  • Talk about how voting is a vital tool in our democracy. Avoid saying that voting is the ONLY way to make our voices heard or make change. Protesting, testifying in legislatures and community meetings, and sharing information are all ways we can make change as well.

Register to vote and check your registration

Use up to your state’s registration deadline, if applicable

  • Have you moved or changed your name since the last time you voted? It’s time to update your voter registration! Go to VOTE411.org/register to get registered with your new info.

  • Do you need to register to vote for the first time? Make sure your voice is heard and use our easy tool at VOTE411.org/register.

  • Make sure your family and friends are registered to vote! Tell them to check VOTE411 to see their registration status, update their registration, or get registered for the first time!

  • Even if you’re already registered, it’s a good idea to check your registration. Visit VOTE411.org/check-registration by [insert your voter registration deadline] to confirm your registration information in case you need to update it.

  • Let them know when the registration deadline is in your state and/or if they can register on Election Day.

Make a voting plan

  • Make sure you have a voting plan for how, when, and where you will cast your ballot. Check VOTE411.org for all your options for mail voting, voting early, and finding your polling place.

  • [November 5] is right around the corner, which means it’s time to make a voting plan! Make a plan now for how you’ll cast your ballot: by mail, in person, early or on Election Day. Set up transportation if needed. Request your mail ballot. Decide what day you will vote early.

  • Check out all your options for how, when, and where to cast your ballot at VOTE411.org.

  • Share specifics like early voting locations and times in your area and what voters are required to bring (ID, utility bill, etc.).

  • If we can help answer any questions you have about the election process, please feel free to contact us at [League contact info].

Plan your ballot

  • Do you know who is asking for your vote? See all the races and candidates on your ballot by typing in your address at VOTE411.org.

  • See candidate stances on the issues that matter most, and compare candidate answers using our ballot lookup tool at VOTE411.org.

  • Has your candidate filled out the VOTE411 candidate questions? If not, tell them you need to hear from them! Write to your candidates on social media and urge them to respond to VOTE411 questions ASAP.

  • Hearing directly from candidates in debates and forums is an essential part of our elections so that voters know where candidates stand on issues BEFORE they cast their ballot.

  • Find more messaging guidance on candidate engagement here.

Democracy is on voters’ minds

  • In an August NBC poll, registered voters said the top issue on their minds is the threats facing our democracy.

  • Voters know that a healthy democracy requires equal access for all of us to make our voices heard.

  • Voters have a lot of things on their minds this election season — reproductive rights, the economy, community safety and so much more — and they see voting as a critical lever of power for influencing these issues.

  • A recent YWCA poll shows that women voters are most concerned about the economy, gun violence, health access/reproductive access, and racial justice.

The League’s role

  • Every year, Leagues across the country provide voters with the critical information they need to make an informed vote.

  • Using our voter guides, VOTE411, and hundreds of educational events like candidate forums, we prepare voters to make their voices heard.

Poll worker recruitment

Through mid-September, unless your community is facing a shortage and still recruiting

  • People power our elections, so sign up to be a poll worker at VOTE411.org.

  • Our elections need YOU! Help staff your local polling place by signing up to be a poll worker at VOTE411.org.

Election workforce

Most useful following the election — find more post-election messaging guidance here

  • People power our elections, whether it’s elections officials who work to serve our community year-round or the poll workers who step forward to support our community during voting, our elections are free, fair, and accessible because of people based in our community.

  • Elections officials work year-round to support our community, ensure all voters have an equal voice in our elections, and protect the integrity of the democratic system.

  • Our election workforce, made up of ordinary people from our community, makes sure every election runs smoothly and everyone's vote is counted.
